What to do when man’s best friend gets the munchies, or should we say the data crunchies!

Posted by ELC on 3/31/2017 to News

FACT: We’ve created more information in the last two years than in the entirety of recorded history. That’s an awful lot of photos, memories, and important documents.

In this modern day most of us own a computer (83% in fact) and a mobile phone (89%) which make creating and capturing data quick and easy. It is equally quick and easy to back up our precious data and preserve our memories, yet only 1 in 4 of us regularly back up our data.

Data loss, whether short or long-term, can be crippling to the day-to-day operations of an organisation which is why having a robust data protection and recovery plan in place is of paramount importance.

Formal plans should address a) how company data is kept secure, and b) how data will be recovered in the event of loss.

Cryptic messages, strange noises, unexplained disappearances…

Whilst most computer components are electrical, the hard drive is mechanical, and like anything mechanical its life is limited, over time its performance will deteriorate and ultimately it will die!

And when it does it can take with it all the files stored on it.

Data Resus throws a lifeline to water-damaged phones

Data Resus throws a lifeline to water-damaged phones

We hear stories time and time again of phones dropped in the toilet, in our drinks, in the washing up sink, phones which have gone through the washing machine or were dropped on holiday in the pool.

Our mobile phones carry so much data now that any potential damage is a huge risk. We save our contact numbers, our photos, even our documents on our phones and, unfortunately, they are prone to damage and our SD cards corrupting.

If this happens to you and your phone refuses to switch on after being dropped in water and you haven't backed up your data in the cloud or elsewhere, does this mean you have to accept all your data is gone forever from water damage? Not necessarily. You may be able to take steps to get your phone working again, and you may also be able to access all those files you feared were lost forever.
